Activities in San Sebastian
There is talk going around about a magical place that transports you back in time to an aura of mystique and history. San Sebastian del Oeste is the name of this magical place and is located in an enchanting valley in the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range on the 1 ½ hours east of Puerto Vallarta.
Mexico is mostly famous to tourists for its beautiful beach resorts. However, San Sebastian is a different kind of place. It is a destination where you can experience a tranquil environment enveloped with rich history. When Spaniard conquistadors originally encountered San Sebastian in the 16th century, they found vast mineral resources such as gold, silver, and iron. This discovery led to exponential growth over a period of 300 years and caused San Sebastian to become a leading mineral resource directly to Spain. This in turn created job opportunities and its population soared to over 20,000. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1910 caused the mining to cease and ultimately, the city faded into the background.
Today, the remaining inhabitants of this peaceful city are the driving force behind its new awakening. By creating accommodations and dining options as well as entertainment, San Sebastian no longer has to be just a day trip for the casual encounter. Before 2008, it would have taken 6 hours to reach the city due to perilous paths filled with potholes and hairpin turns. Today San Sebastian is located a convenient drive 90 minutes from Puerto Vallarta thanks to newly paved roads.
Several historic inns around the city provide authentic Mexican accommodations. For example, Hotel de Puente, Casita Alicia, Hacienda Esperanza, and Pabellon Mexicano all exude an Old World charm that will soothe your senses. Within their walls, you can find details that date back to their original construction. Rich colors and amazing floras explode everywhere. You may even find a fireplace within your suite, as well as hospitable staff ready to meet your needs. At the local coffee plantation, Café Altura, coffee is brewing and readily available for you to partake before embarking on your days adventures, whatever you decide to do.
San Sebastian has good restaurants ranging from very good to just good. You will find all of the food served in all of the restaurants to be of good quality and reasonably priced.
There are many things to do in San Sebastian. You will not find the typical nightclub banging its beat until the wee hours of the morning. San Sebastian is a culturally aware community that prefers to host art and music festivals throughout the year. The local Catholic Church itself is the backdrop of many cultural religious events.
For those with an athletic edge, the surrounding Sierra Madre Mountains offer many opportunities for hiking or mountain biking or horse or mule riding. A natural elevation exists called La Bufa and once the peak is reached, you can see the ocean. Near La Bufa is the village of Real Alto with a 17th century church which is very important in the religious life of the area.
The economy today within the city is slowly rebuilding itself and encouraging travelers of any age to visit its tranquil environment. So, bring your sweater for the cool evenings, your camera for beautiful photo opportunities, and a good book for relaxing and join the many people who have discovered this enchanting place.
