During this colonial times, this region was named "Real de San Sebastián", this denomination began during the XIX Century. In the middle of the XIX Century this Municipality was known as San Sebastián. In 1983 this municipality acquired its current denomination. One should know that the municipality of San Sebastian del Oeste is very large and includes many towns or villages. The village of San Sebastian del Oeste is relatively small with a population of approximately 600 people and is one of the villages of the municipality of San Sebastian del Oeste.
Weather
San Sebastián’s dry season is November through May, although it does not rain much in June or October. Average high temperatures in the winter season are in the mid-70’s °F (24°C) and the average lows in the mid-40’s °F (7°C).
During the rainy season July through October, it rains most afternoons and nights, but the atmosphere is special and very refreshing. One can actually see the clouds roll into San Sebastian and then be enveloped by them. It feels moist, but comfortable at the same time. The foliage returns to green and the flowers bloom. The temperature is cooler than Puerto Vallarta with less humidity except when it is raining or the clouds have come in. the average difference in the temperature in San Sebastian from Puerto Vallarta is about 15°F (9°C). The climate is much more pleasant than at the coast. The average high temperatures during the summer are in the mid-80’s °F (29°C) and the average low temperatures are in the low 60s°F (16°C).

The Coat of arms that represents this Municipality was approved in 1993, during the Town Council meeting, according to the record 9, date July 1st; being the Municipal President professor María Bertha Aguirre Sánchez.

San Sebastián del Oeste (“San Sebastian”) municipality is located in the Western part of the State; in the coordinates 20º39'45' and 21º02'30' North Latitude and from 104º35'00' to 104º51'00' West Longitude; at 1,480m (4,880 ft.) above sea level.
Size
The territorial area of the village of San Sebastian is: 1,400.13 km2 (320 acres).
Boundaries
The delimitations of the municipality of San Sebastian are: to the North with Nayarit state; to the South with Mascota, to the East with Guachinango and Mascota; and to the West with Puerto Vallarta.
