Where can you go to find beautiful beaches, fine cuisine, and a vast variety of entertainment? Puerto Vallarta. This unique and wonderful city is located on the Western coast of Mexico on one of the largest bays in the world, Banderas Bay. Today, most people know of Puerto Vallarta. However, the city was not always the public attraction that it is now. Puerto Vallarta previously existed only as a piece of beautiful geography. During the late 15th century, Spanish explorers discovered the bay and made it a safe harbor for the ships and their sailors. One of the first to propose a settlement was Captain Pedro de Unamano. Puerto Vallarta began to realize its true economic potential after the discovery of salt as a local resource. Salt is necessary for refining silver. Silver was one of the minerals mined in the local mining cities like San Sebastian del Oeste. Little by little, as the years passed, more and more companies saw the economic prospective of setting up shop in Puerto Vallarta. This in turn gave cause for an airport to be constructed as more and more people wanted to experience the charm of the seaside community with beautiful beaches.
Today, Puerto Vallarta has evolved into an extremely popular tourist destination as a sun-drenched colonial town on the beautifully blue Pacific Ocean. Visitors can discover a plethora of authentic Old World architecture enhanced by the colorful beauty of the indigenous plant life. The buildings display traditional terra cotta roofs while their white washed walls gleam pristinely in the sun. As a backdrop, mineral rich, palm covered mountains rise up effortlessly and over look the Puerto Vallarta streets paved in cobblestone. The location of the town on the bay gives a protective shelter from any severe weather.
Accommodations are as plentiful and unique as the travelers who grace them. Whether you are someone looking for complete pampering in any one of the cosmopolitan resorts or just one looking for a quaint, elegant get a way, there is no shortage of selection.
If you are looking to shop for authentic wares or art, look no further then the quaint shops lining the streets of Downtown. You could spend your entire day wandering the avenues and finding delightful hidden surprises around every corner. Visit El Gato Gordo, the small shop stocked with Mexican wrestling masks and Cuban cigars. For the more feminine desires, the Huichol Collection is a shop that boasts a collection of Huichol beadwork, thread paintings, and jewelry. To rest your feet, stop at Café de Olla with its sidewalk grill and open kitchen. Here, Mariachis stroll around while the owner greets all who grace its presence.
The nightlife of Puerto Vallarta is the best as it offers a variety of entertainment for all preferences. Whether you are single or traveling with a group there is a place for you to discover. There are bullfights held in the Plaza de Toros just opposite the Marina from November to April and the Cine Bahia offers movies shown in English with Spanish subtitles. If you are into more cabaret-type performances, visit the Santa Barbara Theater, where musical reviews, concerts, and plays are staged.
Whatever the reason, Puerto Vallarta cannot be missed. Visit the warm, tranquil waters of the Banderas Bay where a world of stingrays, tropical fish and whales abide. Stay in town, or venture beyond its borders for more adventures. Puerto Vallarta is a vacation that you will never forget and you will not wait to come back to.
