Rancho Ermitas has a long and distinguished history as a way point used by travelers from Mascota to San Sebastian del Oeste. The road used still exists today although portions of the road, now replaced by a modern highway, are no longer useable. Ermitas means “hermitage” in English. Rancho Ermitas was a resting point in the long and arduous journey to the important silver mining town of San Sebastian del Oeste from Guadalajara and Mascota. At that time, Puerto Vallarta was a small fishing village.
Now, Rancho Ermitas is an operating ranch raising mules. Our primary goal is to breed high quality, large mules to be used for riding and working cattle.
We imported a mammoth jack and 8 quarter horse mares from Texas to start raising mules for riding and working cows. Because San Sebastian del Oeste is in a mountainous region, horses are not suitable except in the flatter areas. Our mules will be about the size of a quarter horse or a little larger. From the mares, they should inherit a natural affinity for working cows although one of the mares sire was a racing quarter horse.
Jet, the mammoth jack, is black and born in August of 2004, and has a wonderfully nice personality. We wanted a good quality mammoth jack with a good disposition since temperament is an inheritable trait. His sire is 16 hands (one hand equals 4 inches) at the withers or 64 inches high. Please see the section named “Reference Sire” in this web site for more information about Jet’s heritage and to find a link to the web site of his sire’s owners at the Barred M Ranch in Texas.
Our first foal was born in August 2009 and is a beautiful sorrel color. Jet’s previous foals were the colors of their mothers, the last ones being female that was solid black and a male mule which was sorrel in color and very large for his age. Yes, there are male mules even though they are rare. See the links for more information about mules. We are excited about our upcoming foals and will post pictures as soon as they are born.
Please feel free to explore the rest of our web site and the web site of San Sebastian Properties at www.sansebastianproperties.com. We have opened a real estate office in the village of San Sebastian del Oeste because we saw a need for people interested in buying real estate in the San Sebastian del Oeste and Mascota areas to have a reliable and competent resource to help them in their effort to obtain property in this unique and beautiful land.
